Teaching non-standard measurement to 1st Grade students allows them to communicate their reasoning and mathematical thinking. When students become comfortable and proficient in understanding and using these forms of measurement, they are able to eventually apply these skills to standard units and more complex data analysis.
In this Measurement Unit, students will learn the following grade level standards:
*Order objects by length
*Compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object
*Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end
*Understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps

LET’S LOOK AT THE MATH CENTERS FOR UNIT 6 IN ACTION…
CENTER NUMBER 1: Shortest to Longest
Number the objects from shortest to longest with numbers 1, 2 and 3. Record your answers on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 2: Shortest to Tallest
Number the thermometer degrees from shortest to tallest with numbers 1, 2 and 3. Record your answers on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 3: Comparing Units
Look at the units of measurement. Read the question and clip the correct answer.
CENTER NUMBER 4: What’s the Difference?
Measure each object using unit cubes. Compare the lengths. Color the difference in units on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 5: Measuring Flower Stems
Measure the stem of each flower using the seed ruler. Record the lengths on the recording sheet and complete the statements.
CENTER NUMBER 6: Nonstandard Measurement
Use unit snap cubes to measure the objects. Record your answers on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 7: Build it and Compare it!
Use play dough to make the objects that are listed on the task card. Compare the lengths of the objects and record.
CENTER NUMBER 8: A “Mazing” Measurement
Use the worm units to measure how many are needed to get through the maze. Answer the questions on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 9: Who’s the Tallest?
Pull a task card and the picture cards to match. Read the clues and put the cards in order. On the recording sheet, color the person who is the tallest.
CENTER NUMBER 10: Who Does it Belong to? (measuring height)
Read the clues on the card to find out who owns each item.
CENTER NUMBER 11:Who Does it Belong to? (measuring length)
Read the clues on the card to find out who owns each item.
CENTER NUMBER 12: Scoop and Order
Using a spoon, scoop some unit snap cubes out of a bowl and snap them together. Repeat this 2 more times. Place them in order from longest to shortest and record the heights.
CENTER NUMBER 13: Comparing Heights
Line up the animals from shortest to tallest. Answer the questions.
CENTER NUMBER 14: Comparing Lengths
Compare the lengths of the items on the card. Fill in the blanks to make the statements true.
CENTER NUMBER 15: Estimation Station (Paperclips)
Flip a card. Look at the length of the object on the card. Estimate how many more paperclips you would need to measure it.
CENTER NUMBER 16: Estimation Station (Counting Bears)
Flip a card. Look at the length of the object on the card. Estimate how many more counting bears you would need to measure it.
THERE ARE 29 NO PREP PRACTICE PAGES INCLUDED IN UNIT 6
For each page, there is a grade level standard attached so you know EXACTLY what you are covering! You can feel confident that ALL the standards for First Grade are being covered!
HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?
I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins, because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me. However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon sized ziplock baggie.
