First grade is a very important year where students are building a strong foundation in their journey for mathematical proficiency. One of the most fundamental mathematical areas that students need to master is basic operations. Students need a LOT of opportunities for practice to become proficient in mastering addition facts. In this Math Made Fun Unit, students will use a variety of hands-on math games and NO PREP practice pages to help achieve mastery.
In this math unit on addition, students will learn to:
*Add within 20 to solve word problems
*Solve word problems with addition of 3 numbers (addends)
*Apply the commutative and associative properties of addition
*Add within 20 and demonstrate fluency of addition within 10
*Decomposing and composing numbers
*Understand the meaning of the equal sign and true or false equations
*Find the unknown number in an addition problem
*Use a variety of strategies to help solve math problems more quickly
The First Grade Math Made Fun Unit 2 is loaded with 31 hands-on math centers and 88 practice pages to help teach, reinforce and master basic addition up to 20.

LET’S LOOK AT THE MATH CENTERS FOR UNIT 2 IN ACTION…
CENTER NUMBER 1: ADDITION SUMS CLIP CARDS
Read each addition problem. If the sum of the problem matches the sum in the middle of the card, clip it.
CENTER NUMBER 2: ADDITION SPIN AND GRAPH
Spin the spinner. Solve the problem and graph the sum.
CENTER NUMBER 3: ROLL, ADD AND COVER
Roll a die. Solve an addition problem in the row of the number you rolled. Record the answer on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 4: CIRCLE THE SUMS
Circle the numbers that add up to the given sum. Color a star for each set you find. Write the number sentence.
CENTER NUMBER 5: MAKE 10 AND ADD
Look at the first number. Decide what number must be added to make 10 and write it into the first bubble. Then complete the number bond. Fill in the equation using the new numbers.
CENTER NUMBER 6: I SPY ADDITION FACTS
Using a magnifying glass, find the addition facts in the picture. Solve the problems and record.
CENTER NUMBER 7: ADDITION UP TO 20
Flip a card. Use the given manipulatives to solve the addition problem.
CENTER NUMBER 8: ICE CREAM SUMS
Solve the problems on the ice cream scoops and sort them to the correct ice cream cones.
CENTER NUMBER 9: TIC-TAC-TOE ADDITION
Take turns with a friend solving the addition problems. Each player uses a different color to write the answers. The first person to get three in a row wins.
CENTER NUMBER 10: PENCIL PUZZLES
Match the problem with the sum to complete the pencil puzzle.
CENTER NUMBER 11: FLIP FLOP FACTS
Spin both spinners. Add the numbers and write the math fact. Then, write a flip flop fact.
CENTER NUMBER 12: DOMINO FACTS
Choose a domino. Record the addition problem. Switch the numbers to show the commutative property.
CENTER NUMBER 13: TEN PLUS YOUR SPIN
Spin the spinner. Add ten to the number that you spun. Cover the sum on the board.
CENTER NUMBER 14: DOUBLES BOARD GAME
Play with multiple players. Take turns rolling a die. Move your game piece the number of spaces of your roll. Solve the addition problem. If you get the answer correct, cover the space with a marker. If you are wrong, leave the space empty.
CENTER NUMBER 15: DOUBLES PLUS 1 BOARD GAME
Play with multiple players. Take turns rolling the dice. Move your game piece the number of spaces of your roll. Solve the addition problem. If you get the answer correct, cover the space with a marker. If you get the answer wrong, leave the space empty.
CENTER NUMBER 16: PAIRS OF TEN AND MORE
Find the two numbers on the strip that add to ten. Circle the numbers. Then add the third number. Record your answer on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 17: ADD THE MISSING ADDEND
Write the number that must be added to the top number to make 10. Add the numbers. Record your answer on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 18: DOMINOS: FIND THE EQUAL
Pick a domino. Add the dots. Find the other domino that has the same sum. Record both equations on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 19: EQUATIONS- TRUE OR FALSE
Decide if the addition equations are true or false. Sort them to the correct card. Record your answers on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 20: MEMORY-MATCH THE SUM
Place all of the cards face-down. Players take turns flipping two cards at a time. If the sums of the cards match, the player gets to keep both cards. Record the equivalent equations on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 21: BALANCING EQUATIONS
Find two addition problems that have the same sum to balance on the scale. Place them on the scale and record the equations on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 22: DOUBLES PLUS 1
Two players each flip a card and cover a matching number on the game board. Continue until the board is filled.
CENTER NUMBER 23: DOUBLES PLUS 2
Two players each flip a card and cover a matching number on the game board. Continue until the board is filled.
CENTER NUMBER 24: COMPARE SUMS TO 10
Flip a card. Add the numbers. Decide if the sum is less than, greater than or equal to 10. Sort the cards on the mat.
CENTER NUMBER 25: BOWLING PIN ADDITION
Roll two dice and add them up. Cross out 1 or 2 pins whose sum equals your roll. Continue playing until you cannot eliminate the total. Record your final score on the bowling ball. A perfect score is 0.
CENTER NUMBER 26: MISSING ADDENDS
Complete the equation by filling in the missing addend.
CENTER NUMBER 27: PIZZA PIE ADDITION

HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?
I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins, because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me. However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon sized ziplock baggie.

I see that you have different colored pages for differentiated groups, which I like. Does it mention which ones should be printed in a different color to help us know?

I noticed that the First Grade Math bundle Unit 3 subtraction does not have the math standards broken down for the centers whereas the other units do. Was this sheet left out of the bundle or does it not exist? Thanks in advance! Nancy

Hi Nancy!
Oh my! I’m not sure how I let that one slip! I will update it with the grade level standards for the centers as soon as I get the chance!
Kindly,
Annie
