Teaching a child to learn how to read is exciting! Once a child has worked on phonemic awareness and letter names, they can move onto segmenting and blending 3 letter CVC words. This is a skill that requires a LOT of practice! CVC words are incredibly rewarding for children to read. They begin to understand that by blending letter sounds together, they can produce words! Laying a strong foundation in segmenting, blending and fluently reading CVC words can greatly boost confidence for beginning readers.
WHAT ARE CVC WORDS?
CVC words are words that follow a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, such as cat, bed, pig, dog, and run. They contain a short vowel in the middle.
WHY TEACH CVC WORDS?
By teaching CVC words, we lay a strong foundation for phonics. We give children the tools they need to break the reading code. Phonics is the connection between graphemes (letter symbols) and sounds. When we teach phonics systematically and directly, students are able to build a foundation that adds to their reading tool kit. CVC words are the first set of reading instruction that a child will need to master to become a fluent reader.
