2nd Grade Math: Money

If you’ve spent any time with second graders, you’ll know that they LOVE to work with money! Therefore, I’ve gone above and beyond the normal standards for this Money Unit. Since money is a life-long skill, this unit will help students not only master solving word problems, but practice counting and working with money in a variety of ways.

In this math unit on Money, students will learn to:

* Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.

* Use $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.

* Count and show money up to $5.

* Identify the least amount of coins needed to make up a value.

* Find multiple ways using coins and dollars to have the same value.

* Compare values of two sets of money.

* Come up with the difference needed to reach a dollar from a given amount.

* Decide if there is enough money to buy a certain item.

HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?

I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins, sinc they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me.  However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon sized ziplock baggie.
