Teaching non-standard measurement and data to Kindergarten students allows them to communicate their reasoning and mathematical thinking. When students become comfortable and efficient in understanding and using these forms of measurement, they are able to eventually apply these skills to standard units and more complex data analysis.
In this math unit, students will learn how to:
*Identify attributes for measurement (i.e. big, heavy, tall, long, short, etc.)
*Compare and order objects
*Use non-standard units to measure common objects
*Collect and compare data

CENTER NUMBER 1: Measure with Pennies
Flip a card. Find the item in your classroom. Measure the item using pennies. Record the length on the recording sheet.

Use the paw print ruler to measure the height of the dogs. Record your answers.

Roll a die. Cover an object that matches the length comparison.

Compare the weight of a gallon of milk with the objects. Sort the objects to the correct card.
CENTER NUMBER 12: Comparing Length
Compare the length of a flashlight with the objects. Sort the objects to the correct card.
CENTER NUMBER 13: Comparing Height
Compare the height of a blender with the objects. Sort the objects to the correct card.
CENTER NUMBER 14: Spin and Cover Weight
Two players take turns spinning the spinner. The player who spins finds an object that matches the spin and covers it.
CENTER NUMBER 15: Spin and Cover Height
Two players take turns spinning the spinner. The player who spins finds an object that matches the spin and covers it.
CENTER NUMBER 16: Spin and Cover Length
Two players take turns spinning the spinner. The player who spins finds an object that matches the spin and covers it.
CENTER NUMBER 17: Weight- True or False
Flip two cards. Place them on the scale. Compare the weight of the two objects. Decide if the scale is true or false. Record your answers.
CENTER NUMBER 18: Compare Heights
Compare the heights of the two caterpillars. Complete the sentence on the recording sheet.
CENTER NUMBER 19: Sort and Classify Seasons
Flip a card. Look at the picture and decide if it is a summer item or a winter item.
CENTER NUMBER 20: Sort and Classify Animals
Flip a card. Look at the animal and decide if it has two legs or four legs. Write how many animals are in each category in the boxes.
CENTER NUMBER 21: Venn Diagram- Sort and Classify
Flip a card. Look at the picture and decide if it is a circle, the color blue, or both. Record how many of each type in the boxes.
CENTER NUMBER 22: Sort and Classify Transportation
Count the vehicles. Then color the correct number of boxes to show the number of vehicles. Write the number for each and answer the questions.
CENTER NUMBER 23: Sort and Classify Sweet Treats
Count the treats. Then color the correct number of boxes to show the number of treats. Write the number for each and answer the questions.
CENTER NUMBER 24: Sort and Classify Dinosaurs
Count the dinosaurs. Then color the correct number of boxes to show the number of dinosaurs. Write the number for each and answer the questions.
CENTER NUMBER 25: Sort and Classify Fruit
Count the fruit. Then color the correct number of boxes to show the number of fruit. Write the number for each and answer the questions.
CENTER NUMBER 26: Measurement with Pets
Flip a card. Count the number of units for the height or length of the object. Record your answer.
CENTER NUMBER 27: Count and Graph
Count the number of each type of object. Then color the boxes to show the number of each type of object. Write the number of each type.

HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?
I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins, because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me. However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon sized ziplock baggie.

Do you make homeschool versions, as in cheaper option without group work or things needed for classroom??
Hello!
The math centers come with a black and white version to save on colored ink. You don’t have to laminate the pieces if you are using it for a homeschool room, but you can if you’d like to keep them for future use and review. These packets also come with the NO PREP component, which you can use on its own. I hope that helps!
