Beginning in 3rd Grade, students can take what they have learned about standard measurement and basic multiplication, and apply it to measuring perimeter and area of a variety shapes. These math concepts are best learned with engaging and hands-on measurement activities. This Math Made Fun Unit teaches these skills along with estimating and adding together volumes and weights of objects. When students become comfortable and proficient in measuring perimeter and area, they are able to transfer these skills to more complex data analysis.

LET’S LOOK AT THE MATH CENTERS FOR UNIT 7 IN ACTION…
Center 1: Flip and Show the Perimeter
Flip a card. Use the grid to show a shape with the matching perimeter. Record the shape and the perimeter on the recording sheet.
Center 2: Perimeter of the Shape
Pick a card. Use the given measurements to find the perimeter of the shape.
Center 3: Perimeter Match Up
Choose a card. Find the perimeter. Sort it to the correct mat.
Center 4: Missing Lengths
Pick a card. Use the given perimeter and lengths to find the missing length(s).
Center 5: Zoo Habitat Areas
Pick a card. Find the area of square units for the animal’s enclosure. Record your answers on the recording sheet.
Center 6: Flip and Build the Area
Flip a card. Use the grid to build the area on the card.
Center 7: Find the Area: Rectangles
Flip a card. Find the area of the rectangle by multiplying the length and width. Tile in the units.
Center 8: Area Match
Pick a card. Find the two shapes that have the same area. Color the matching answers on the recording sheet.
Center 9: Distributive Property
Pick a card. Use the distributive property to find the area of the tiled rectangles.
Center 10: Find the Area (L-Shapes)
Pick a card. Use the given measurements to find the missing lengths on the figure. Then find the area of the L shape.
Center 11: Area and Perimeter Word Problems
Read the word problem. Use the space on the recording sheet to draw the problem. Record the area and perimeter.
Center 12: Mass Measurement Sort
Pick a card. Choose the best unit of measurement: grams or kilograms. Place the card in the correct column.
Center 13: Measurement Units (Grams and Kilograms)
Choose the best unit of measurement. Record the answer on the recording sheet.
Center 14: Measurement Units (Liters and Milliliters)
Choose the best unit of measurement. Record the answer on the recording sheet.
Center 15: Volume (Estimate and Add)
Pick a card. Estimate the volume of liquid in each cylinder to the nearest milliliter. Add the two estimates.
Center 16: Measurement Word Problems
Read the word problem. Use the space on the recording sheet to show your work. Record your answer.
Center 17: Area of the Shape
Flip a card. Find the area of the shape on the card. Record the area on the recording sheet.
Center 18: Capacity Measurement Sort
Pick a card. Choose the best unit of measurement: milliliters or liters. Place the card in the correct column.
These no-prep practice pages are convenient and will help students master the skills needed for a more in-depth understanding of measuring perimeter and area. For each page, there is a grade-level standard attached so you know EXACTLY what you are covering! You can feel confident that ALL the standards for Third Grade are being covered!
HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?
I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me. However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon-sized ziplock baggie.

Annie,
It is so refreshing to see such excellent math supplemental materials and lessons that are aligned to the Common Core Standards. As a teacher, it is often difficult to find materials that meet the needs of standards while being engaging for students. I also appreciate your pre and post assessments. Unless you have a good math curriculum, it is often difficult to know if students are being assessed appropriately for the standards that they need to learn. Thank you for providing well rounded units for all third grade math concepts.
