Word Family Caterpillar

I am SUPER excited about our new Word Family Caterpillar!  This bright and colorful caterpillar will be a HUGE part of our word work this coming school year!

Each caterpillar piece will work with a single word family. There are 115 word families in all!  WOW…that’s a lot of word family word work!  Best of all, there are 9 different word work activities to help with spelling patterns and fluency!

Use the Caterpillar as a growing Word Wall!
Each time you teach a word family, add the caterpillar piece and watch it grow!

Activity #1- Caterpillar Bookmark:
Begin the lesson by creating a caterpillar bookmark. The bookmark can be used to read and recognize word family patterns.  Students can read the words again and again.

Activity #2- Spin and Write Word Family Words:
Use the words on the caterpillar piece to write the words on the spinner. Then write the words on the bottom line. Use a paperclip spinner and pencil to spin a word! Record the word in the correct column. Continue spinning and playing until you have a 1st and 2nd place winner. Super FUN and super EFFECTIVE!

Activity #3- My (Word) Family Caterpillar:
Write six words from the Word Family Caterpillar onto the little caterpillar. Use the words on the caterpillar to write 3-5 sentences.

Activity #4- My Word Family Caterpillar (Read it, Stamp it, Write it)
Read the words on the Word Family Caterpillar.
Stamp them on the top lines.
Write the words on the bottom lines.

Activity #5- Rainbow Write
Write the letters of each word in rainbow colors.

Activity #6- Roll and Write a Word Family Word
Write the words from the word family caterpillar above the dice. Roll a die and write the word in the column. Continue playing until you have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner!

  

Activity #7 Word Family Writing (Write with a Pencil, Pen and Marker)
Use the words from the word family caterpillar to write your words with a pencil, pen and marker.

Activity #8 Type Your Words
Write the words from your Word Family Caterpillar on the line. Type your words on the keyboard and color the letters that you used.

Activity #9 Triangle Words
Write your words from the caterpillar piece on the triangle by adding one letter at a time.
