Turn a $0.99 Puzzle into a Teaching Tool!

I was at the store the other day and the girls begged me to go down the Valentine aisle. It’s hard for kids (and adults) to pass up that colorful isle filled with red Valentine hearts, bears, chocolates, and toys. I told them they could pick one little item to share and we ended up getting a 100 piece, $0.99 Valentine puzzle. I know…big splurge:)
Well, we got home and had some fun with the puzzle and THEN we turned it into a fun teaching tool! This is an inexpensive way to practice counting to 100 and also counting by 10’s.
Here is how to make it:
1) Assemble the 100 piece puzzle and then carefully flip it over.
2) Start from the upper right hand side of the puzzle and work right to left, row by row, putting numbers on the puzzle.
3) I used different colors for each set of 10’s so that we could practice counting by 100.

You are so clever! What a great idea. It could even be done with the letters of the alphabet. And you know, just yesterday I just gave away about 10 puzzles with 28 pieces that I could have just turned them over to write each letter of the alphabet on them! Aaaaghhhh! Well, luckily puzzles are a big hit in my house so we have at least a dozen more! ;o)

Last year I did this and added a piece to the board daily so we knew exactly when the 100th day would be. I kinda forgot about it- thanks for the reminder and all your great ideas! : )

A Teeny Tiny Teacher
We started a 100 piece puzzle the first day of school. I have the children take turns each day to glue a piece together on cardboard. We are almost to the 100th day where we will then display our puzzle for our "100th day party."
