Phonics Made Fun Level A (Short u)

Hands-on, engaging, and systematic phonics for beginning readers! This short u packet is part of Phonics Made Fun Level A Bundle! Included in this bundle is EVERYTHING you need to teach beginning phonics! I have included detailed lesson plans, pre- and post-assessments, differentiation for your below level, on level and above level students. Level A works with short vowel CVC words. Through games, hands-on centers, and activities, students work on building confidence and fluency! The BEST part, learning to read becomes FUN!

The activities included in Phonics Made Fun are low-prep, with minimal cutting. Today we are going to take a look at the short u part of the curriculum. 

EASY-TO-FOLLOW LESSON PLANS

These easy-to-follow lesson plans take the guesswork out of how to teach phonics explicitly! Here is a breakdown of the lessons.

Each lesson is broken up into 5 easy-to-follow parts. 

  • Mini Lesson- Introduce the phonics skill of the day. 
  • Activities- Activities that pair well with this lesson. 
  • Practice Pages(s)- Practice sheet(s) that pair well with this lesson. 
  • Small Group Intervention- Small group teacher table lessons to support students who need extra practice with the phonics skill being taught. 
  • Extension- Extension activities to support students who are ready to continue beyond the phonics skill being taught. 

ASSESSMENTS

The unit pre-assessment gives an opportunity to assess prior knowledge. Use this assessment to guide your teaching throughout the unit.

The unit post-assessment gives an opportunity to measure what your students have learned. Use this assessment to guide your intervention, spiral review, and future teaching.

For Phonics Made Fun Level A (short u words), here is the scope for the unit:

  1. Blending CVC short u words (Lessons 1-3)
  2. Reading CVC short u words (Lessons 4-6)
  3. Spelling CVC short u Words (Lessons 7-9)
  4. Applying CVC short u Words (Lessons 10-12)

SEGMENT, BLEND, AND MATCH

Segment each sound in the CVC word, then blend the sounds to say the word. Find the picture that matches the word.

SEGMENT AND BLEND CVC WORDS

Segment each sound in the CVC word, then blend the sounds to say the word. These cards have green, yellow and red dots to helps students identify the beginning, middle and end sounds.

WORD FAMILY WRITING

These are simple writing prompts that encourage students to use the CVC words learned.

CVC BOX IT UP

Box up the CVC word that matches the picture.

CVC PICTURE WORD MATCH

Match the CVC word to the picture on the jar.

CVC ROLL AND READ

Roll a die and read a CVC word in the matching column. Race to the top to see which column wins!

MISSING SOUNDS

Add the missing sounds to the words.

CVC SPIN AND SPELL

Spin the spinner. Use the letters to stamp the word.

READ, WRITE, AND MATCH

Read the word and trace it, write the word, and find a picture to match.

CVC READ AND MATCH

Read the CVC words and choose the word that matches the picture in each row.

SCRAMBLED UP WORDS

Unscramble the CVC word and circle the picture to match.

SPIN AND WRITE

Spin the spinner. Write the CVC word to match your spin.

WORD BUILDERS

Add a consonant to the beginning of the word to make a CVC word.

CVC COVER BY CODE

Read a CVC word and cover it with the color that matches.

READ AND MATCH

Read the words and cover the word that matches the picture on the bug.

ROLL AND BUILD A WORD

Roll a die. Build a word in that row by adding the word family letters.

Take turns with a partner reading the CVC words. The first person to get 3 in a row wins!

Look for CVC words on the mat. Record your words.

Read the sentence, write the sentence and find the picture to match.

CVC STORIES

Read the simple story. Highlight the short u CVC words in the story. Record four of the words at the bottom.

WRITE THE WORD

Write the word from the word bank that matches the picture.

Roll a die. Move a piece around the board. Spell the CVC word that you land on.

SAY IT, SPELL IT, COVER IT!

Take turns with a friend. Pick a picture. Say the word, spell it and cover it. The first person to get 5 in a row wins!
