The mat shown above uses the following letters: a, b, p, t, m, f, g, d, n and h. With these 10 letters, students will use the pictures on the right to build the following words: hat, bag, map, fan, ham and mad. This particular mat works with short a words.

I have included a recording sheet as well…

Blends and Digraphs Building Mats

After teaching CVC words, students move on to Blends and digraphs Building Mats! There are 46 blends and digraphs mats! For these mats, students work to build words that have beginning or ending blends or digraphs with a short vowel. Naturally, these mats are more challenging than the CVC word mats, but they only introduce blends and digraphs and no other new phonics skills.

The mat shown above focuses on the r blend. The following letters are used: i, o, u, d, r, t, g, f, m, p, c and n. With these 12 letters, students will use the pictures on the right to build the following words: grin, drop, frog, trip, drum, crop. There is also an answer key included for all mats.

  1. Wish I could afford these, they are excellent. I would love to see the digraph one with one box for the one sound. Eg. Sh in one space. I think you can get magnetic diagram letters.
