Teaching preschool students how to classify and sort builds strong reasoning skills. Unit 3 introduces classifying and sorting by categories such as color, type or size. These skills create order and organization for young learners and helps them identify important information for future math skills, such as graphing and measuring. Unit 3 also teaches positional words in a variety of fun ways.

CENTER NUMBER 1: Sort and Classify
Identify the two categories. Sort the cards to the correct mat.
CENTER NUMBER 2: Sorting Coins
Sort the coins to the correct boxes on the mat.
CENTER NUMBER 3: Transportation Sort
Pick a card. Decide if the image is in the air or on land and sort.
CENTER NUMBER 4: Sorting by Color
Sort the snap cubes (or any other type of manipulative) 
by color onto the mat.
CENTER NUMBER 5: Sorting by Size
Sort the bears onto to the mat by small, medium or large.
CENTER NUMBER 6: What Color Am I?
Pick a card. Sort the card to the correct color mat.
CENTER NUMBER 7: I Can Sort by Color
Sort the bears (or any other colorful manipulative) onto to the mat by color.
CENTER NUMBER 8: Spin and Sort by Color
Spin the spinner. Find an item in the room with the same color. Mark the mat and race to the top.
CENTER NUMBER 9: What Shape Am I?
Pick a card. Sort the card to the correct shape mat.
CENTER NUMBER 10: Community Helper Sort
Pick a card. Sort the card to the correct community helper mat.
CENTER NUMBER 11: Food Group Sorting
Pick a card. Sort the card to the correct food group.
CENTER NUMBER 12: Letters and Numbers
Pick a card. Decide if it is a letter or a number. Sort the cards to the mat.
CENTER NUMBER 13: I Can Sort by Shape
Use the mat to sort the pattern blocks by shape.
CENTER NUMBER 14: Take Me There!
Find a partner. Take turns flipping a card. Use manipulatives to show the position named on the card that you flipped. Tell your partner about your work.
CENTER NUMBER 15: Spin and Cover by Size
Spin the spinner. Cover a picture to match the size on your spin.
CENTER NUMBER 16: Spin and Cover by Position
Spin the spinner. Cover a picture to match the position on your spin. (3 pages)
CENTER NUMBER 17: Positional Words Cards
Listen to the directions. Place the animal in the correct position.
CENTER NUMBER 18: Spin a Positional Word
Spin the spinner. Cover a picture to match the position on your spin.
CENTER NUMBER 19: Color and Positional Words
Listen to the directions. Place the object in the correct position in the picture.
CENTER NUMBER 20: Weaving (Lacing) with Positional Words
Weave yarn in, out, through, from behind, from in front of and around the holes on the card. This is a fun way to add some fine motor skills as well!
CENTER NUMBER 21: Simon Says…
Your teacher will read directions to you. Listen carefully and follow the directions. This activity comes with two versions- 1-step directions and 2-step directions.
CENTER NUMBER 22: Positional Word Sort
Pick a card. Sort the card to the correct positional word mat.
CENTER NUMBER 23: I Know My Colors
Read the color word. Spell out the color word with the letters. Find the cards that have a picture with that color.
CENTER NUMBER 24: Color Posters
Look at the items on each poster. Find more items around the classroom that are the color on the poster.
