Teaching non-standard measurement to Preschool students allows them to communicate their reasoning and mathematical thinking in a simple, yet fun, hands-on way! In Unit 7, students will learn about comparing weight, height, length, size, and capacity, and measuring using non-standard units (e.g. counting bears, snap cubes, paper clips, etc.). When students become comfortable and efficient in understanding and using these forms of measurement, they are able to eventually apply these skills to standard units and more complex data analysis.
The Preschool Math Made Fun curriculum helps make learning engaging for little learners all while covering the skills needed to move to the next level (Kindergarten Math Made Fun).
Here are the 7 Units that will be included in the Preschool Math Made Fun Curriculum:
Unit 3: Classify and Sort (Including Color Words and Positional Words)
Unit 4: Comparing Numbers 1-10

Let’s take a look at Unit 7 in Action…
There are 21 Hands-On Centers in this Unit! I’m excited to show you each center and how it works.

CENTER NUMBER 1: Which Side Holds More?
Count the number of snap cubes in each side of the scale. Find the numbers that match the quantities. Decide which side is holding more.

CENTER NUMBER 2: Shorter Than Me
Cover the items that are shorter than you are.

CENTER NUMBER 3: Taller Than Me
Cover the items that are taller than you are.

CENTER NUMBER 4: Weight- Heavier and Lighter
Flip 2 cards. Decide which object is heavier and which object is lighter.

CENTER NUMBER 5: Height- Taller and Shorter
Flip 2 cards. Decide which object is taller and which object is shorter.

CENTER NUMBER 6: I Can Measure!
Use the manipulatives to measure each line. Write the number used in each box.

CENTER NUMBER 7: Measurement Mat- Length
Roll a line of play dough that is the same length as the item.

CENTER NUMBER 8: Measurement Mat- Height
Roll a line of play dough that is the same height as the item.

CENTER NUMBER 9: How Many Cubes Long?
Use snap cubes to measure the length of each line.

CENTER NUMBER 10: How Tall?
Flip a card. Count the number of blocks that shows how tall the object is. Write the number in the box.

CENTER NUMBER 11: How Long?
Flip a card. Count the number of blocks that shows how long the object is. Write the number in the box.

CENTER NUMBER 12: What is Bigger?
Flip a card. Look at the item on the top of the card. Decide which item is bigger than the top item.

CENTER NUMBER 13: What is Smaller?
Flip a card. Look at the item on the top of the card. Decide which item is smaller than the top item.

CENTER NUMBER 14: What is Heavier?
Flip a card. Look at the item on the top of the card. Decide which item is heavier than the top item.

CENTER NUMBER 15: What is Lighter?
Flip a card. Look at the item on the top of the card. Decide which item is lighter than the top item.

CENTER NUMBER 16: Which Holds More?
Flip a card. Look at the item on the top of the card. Decide which item holds more than the top item.

CENTER NUMBER 17: I Can Order By Size
Place the items in order by size on the mat.

CENTER NUMBER 18: Measure on the Farm
Line up the carrot ruler along the line on the card. Count how many carrots long each item is.

CENTER NUMBER 19: Measure In the Classroom
Line up the ruler along the line on the card. Count how many rulers tall each item is.

CENTER NUMBER 20: Measure In the Garden
Line up manipulatives along the line to measure how long or tall each item is.

CENTER NUMBER 21: Weight- Spin and Cover
Spin the spinner. Cover an item that matches your spin.

NO PREP Practice Pages- We all know that kids need a lot of practice to help master math concepts and to help them retain the knowledge. So I’ve made sure that each Preschool Math Unit will have a variety of fun NO PREP practice/worksheet pages for students to practice, practice, practice! These NO PREP practice pages allow students to master math concepts through cutting and pasting, coloring, dice games and more! Best of all, you can refer back to the Preschool Math Standards page and see which standard each page covers! Furthermore, you can connect these pages to a center that covers the SAME standard!
Measurement Posters
Unit 7 includes posters to help assist in teaching the concepts of height, length, width, weight, capacity and size.
