Let’s take a look at each of the First Grade Morning Bins in action! There is no right or wrong way to use these morning bins! For example, you can place all 21 bins out each month and have students work on an individual bin, or you can bring one bin out each day. However, I like the idea of allowing a table group of 4-6 students to work on one bin at a time. This allows them to socialize, work as partners, and learn from one another. I chose larger bins so that I could place all of my manipulatives, baskets and materials in the bins. See bottom of the post for more storage ideas.
Morning Bin #1: Vocabulary
For the months of August and September, we will focus on vocabulary. Each month, students will receive a new set of vocabulary words that are relevant to that specific time of the year. Also, vocabulary words will come with a Vocabulary Chart, picture / word match up and build the word activity cards.
Morning Bin #2: Sounds
Students will sort the pictures that start with the sound.
Morning Bin #3: Segment and Blend
Students will pick the first letter for each word. Then they sound out the mystery CVC word.
Morning Bin #4: Sight Words
Students will use a mirror to read the sight words.
Morning Bin #5: Sequencing
Students will sort the uppercase and lowercase letters in alphabetical order.
Morning Bin #6: Sentences
Students will sort the words to form a sentence on the mat.
Morning Bin #7: Grammar
Students add ending punctuation to each sentence.
Morning Bin #8: Writing
This bin gets students writing! Students will use the vocabulary cards to write a fun story. This is a great opportunity for you to identify your students’ writing abilities.
Morning Bin #9: Rhymes, Syllables & Compound Words
Students will clip the number of syllables for each word.
Morning Bin #10: Text
Set out a group of fiction and non-fiction books. Have sort the books into fiction and non-fiction piles. Then they will write the title of one fiction book and one non-fiction book from the bin and draw a picture to match.
Morning Bin #11: Counting Sequence
This is a fun game! Students will roll a die, count, cover and race to 100.
Morning Bin #12: Comparing Numbers & Making Groups
Students will group the number cards in order (0-20).
Morning Bin #13: Representing Numbers

Morning Bin #19: Days of the Week/Months of the Year

Morning Bin #20: Patterns & Fractions
Students will look at and determine the pattern type, then recreate it.
Morning Bin #21: Social Emotional
Students will tell a story that matches the emotion they spun and then match the correct emotion to the card.
Storage Ideas:
Undoubtedly, The Moffatt Girls Engage Facebook group is a GREAT place for teachers and homeschoolers to share how they are using Moffatt Girls curriculum and resources. For this reason, we would love to have you join! Here are some examples of some ideas that have been shared in the group. Another teacher, Ashley Nicole, has made her space beautiful by using Steralite Bins!
Diana also placed her morning bins in containers from the Dollar Tree.
Similarly, Carrie used heavy duty paper trays from Lakeshore.
