Sight Word Make a Match!

Learning how to read is such an exciting journey and a HUGE part of reading involves SIGHT WORDS!  I finished updating our Sight Word Make a Match packets and I am super happy that the littlest Moffatt Girl LOVES them!

Here are some interesting statics about sight words:
*12 Sight Words make up 25% of those we read and write.
*100 Sight Words make up 50% of those we read and write.
*About 300 Sight Words account for 75% of those we read and write!
Needless to say, sight words are a huge focus when learning how to read.  When kids can master those “tricky” sight words, they are able to focus on sounding out the other words.

On this sight word page we focused on the word “like”.  Although it is a sight word, I was still able to do a little phonics instruction.  Sophia is learning the rule of the “Magic e” and she quickly identified it in the word “like”.  We decided that we would color the i and the e the same color since they work together to make one sound.

We pulled out the Bingo Dabbers (I picked mine up at Lakeshore) and dotted the likes red and the other words green.  This was almost like a craft for her 🙂

And some glueing!  She seems to get a little giddy when we pull out the glue.  I could have had her use the glue stick, but squeezing those glue bottles are SO good for building muscles in the hand and preparing her for writing.

On this sheet we just colored the focused word pink and the other words blue.  We played a game to see how many of the other words she could read.  This is a great way to spiral review the sight words as your student(s) learn them.
