Okay…so they are not exactly sandpaper but felt letters. I have been eyeing the montessori sandpaper letters for a long time, but the price tag…ouch!!! Way too steep for me. I knew that I could make my own for a fraction of the price and I found a great website to help. The only difference is that I hole punched the starting place for tracing the letters. They are SO easy to make
I found my materials at Michaels:
*3 inch discs-4 for $1.29
*stick-it felt letters and numbers

Total $ about $10!!!
There are so many uses for these letters.
Sophia can touch and feel the letters.
Audrey can trace the letters and make words. A great tactile activity!

oh fun! saw your activity on Childhood 101. we did this when my boys were little, but with glitter, on paper plates. they really enjoyed writing the letters in glue and shaking the glitter on (and off :). we used the same technique through their kindergarten years with sight words.

Love this! but do the letters come in lower case too? It's easier to teach lower case first and this is how it is done in most MOntessori classrooms.
I'm not sure. The one that I found had only upper case. I'm sure you can find some online:) let me know!

Great idea, I really like the Montessori concept, but the price tag, I agree ouch! Any ideas for a diy movable alphabet?
@Lori, I used scrapbook letters (they are tag board) for my moveable alphabet. They work great. There were red ones in the Target Dollar section in February. I bought 6 packages and painted the vowels blue. We use them daily. http://theadventuresofbear.blogspot.com/2010/06/school-corner.html but I hadn't painted the vowels yet in the photo.

I like your version better than the sandpaper. I HATE the way sandpaper feels and so does one of my children. Gives me goosebumps…like nails on a chalkboard. LOL! Now, felt I can handle.
What did you use to punch the hole for starting point?
Love it! I didn't know I could buy felt letters but it's a whole lot easier than cutting them out by hand.
