3rd Grade Math: Time

By third grade, students should be well familiar with telling time. It is also a skill that students enjoy greatly and get excited about! Mastering time to the minute should come more easily at this stage. To build their understanding of previously-taught skills, students in third grade learn and practice elapsed time as well. In Unit 6 of Math Made Fun, we focus on identifying start times, end times and elapsed time. Students will practice these skills on digital clocks, analog clocks and time on a line. There are tons of games and hands-on activities to keep your students engaged in this unit!

The lesson plans are broken down into 5 easy-to-follow parts:
1. Objective– What students should be able to do by the end of the lesson.
2. Review- A quick warm-up that has students practice previous skills that will be used in the current lesson.
3. Hook-A fun intro to get students engaged.
4. Mini-Lesson– Teach, model, and discuss the new skill in today’s lesson.
5. Practice- Each practice section lists three types of activities that pair well with the specific lesson.
Center(s)- New center(s) to be introduced with the lesson.
Activity Pages- These pages require some basic materials such as scissors, glue or dice.
Practice Pages- These only require a pencil and crayons! They are great for table work, homework or work on the go!

LET’S LOOK AT THE MATH CENTERS FOR UNIT 6 IN ACTION…

Center 1: Analog and Digital Match

Choose a card.  Pick the digital clock that matches the analog clock.  Record the time on the recording sheet.

Center 2: Time to the Minute

Flip a card.  Write the elapsed time on each digital clock.

Center 3: Make a Match

Match the time to each analog clock. 

Center 4: Roll and Read the Times

Roll a die.  Read the times on the clocks in that row.  Color a star each time you read a row.

Center 5: Tic-Tock-Toe

Take turns with a friend reading the clocks.  Each player uses a different color to cover the clock they read.  The first person to get three in a row wins. 

Center 6: I Can Tell Time to the Minute

Look at the time on the clock.  Pick which written time matches the clock.  Record the digital time.

Center 7: Time to the Minute (Digital to Analog)

Flip a card.  Draw hands on the clock to show the elapsed time.

Center 8: Time- True or False?

Read the analog clock and the digital time. Decide if they show the same time.  Sort the cards to the correct mat.

Center 9: Elapsed Time: Analog to Digital

Flip a card.  Write the elapsed time on each digital clock.

Center 10: Elapsed Time: Analog Clocks

Flip a card.  Draw hands on the clock to show the elapsed time.

Center 11: Elapsed Time

Look at the start time and end time.  Record how much time has passed.

Center 12: Elapsed Time Word Problems

Read and solve the word problem.  Record the time on the recording sheet.

Center 13: Number Line Word Problems (Finding End Times)

Read the word problem.  Use the open number line to solve.  Record the end time on the recording sheet.

Center 14: Number Line Word Problems (Finding Start Times)

Read the word problem.  Use the open number line to solve.  Record the start time on the recording sheet.

Center 15: Number Line Word Problems (Finding Elapsed Times)

Read the word problem.  Use the open number line to solve.  Record the elapsed time on the recording sheet.

Center 16: Time to Make a Match

Find the time that matches the analog clock on the board.

Center 17: Writing Word Problems

Flip a card.  Read the answer.  Write a word problem to match the answer.

Center 18: Time Passes

Flip a card.  Read the start time and end time.  Decide how much time has passed and record it on the recording sheet.

Center 19: I Can Tell Tell Time to the Minute

Flip a card.  Record the digital time using digits and a colon.

Center 20: Elapsed Time Word Problems

Flip a card.  Draw hands on the clock to show the end time from the word problem.

These no-prep practice pages are convenient and will help students master the skills needed for a more in-depth understanding of time. For each page, there is a grade-level standard attached so you know EXACTLY what you are covering! You can feel confident that ALL the standards for Third Grade are being covered!

HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?

I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me.  However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon-sized ziplock baggie.
