Fractions can be so much fun to practice in 3rd Grade.  By this grade level, students should be well acquainted with simple fractions, and they can begin working with fractions in more complex ways.  There are 9 grade level standards covered in this unit! Therefore, this unit is packed with plenty of fun activities to help students master 3rd Grade fractions standards.  It is truly a rewarding experience to see students’ knowledge grow as they build on previously taught lessons.

The lesson plans are broken down into 5 easy-to-follow parts:
1. Objective– What students should be able to do by the end of the lesson.
2. Review- A quick warm-up that has students practice previous skills that will be used in the current lesson.
3. Hook-A fun intro to get students engaged.
4. Mini-Lesson– Teach, model, and discuss the new skill in today’s lesson.
5. Practice- Each practice section lists three types of activities that pair well with the specific lesson.
Center(s)- New center(s) to be introduced with the lesson.
Activity Pages- These pages require some basic materials such as scissors, glue or dice.
Practice Pages- These only require a pencil and crayons! They are great for table work, homework or work on the go!

Center 1: Make a Match

Find the fraction that matches the picture on the mat.

Center 2: Giraffe Fractions

Pick a card. Look at the fraction on the giraffe. Record the fraction on the recording sheet.

Center 3: Donut Fractions

Pick a card. Look at the fraction inside the donut. Record the fraction on the recording sheet.

Center 4: Spin and Cover a Fraction

Spin the spinner.  Find and cover a fraction that matches your spin.

Center 5: Fraction Word Problems

Read the word problem. Record your answer on the recording sheet.

Center 6: Modeling Fractions

Two players take turns choosing a fraction on the board.  Use manipulatives to model the fraction.  If your model is correct, cover the fraction.  The first person to get 4 in a row wins!

Center 7: Which Number Line Shows…

Choose a card.  Read the question.  Find the number line that represents the fraction.  Record your answer on the recording sheet.

Center 8: Name the Fraction

Pick a card. Look at where the letter is on the number line. Record the fraction. 

Center 9: Fractions on a Number Line

Flip a card.  Use the fraction model to label the number line on the recording sheet.

Center 10: Frog Fractions Number Line

Pick a card. Look at where the frog is on the number line. Record the fraction. Draw a bar model of the fraction and write it in word form.

Center 11: Whole Pizza Pie

Flip a card.  Count the parts. Write the fraction that the pizza represents.

Center 12: Comparing Fractions (Same Numerator)

Pick a card. Compare the first fraction to the second fraction, and decide which symbol is correct.

Center 13: More or Less than 1/2

Look at the fraction on the card.  Decide if the fraction is more than or less than one-half.

Center 14: Comparing Fractions (Same Denominator)

Pick a card. Compare the first fraction to the second fraction, and decide which symbol is correct.

Center 15: More, Less or Equal?

Read the fraction on the card.  Decide if the fraction is more than, less than or equal to one-half.

Center 16: Flip and Compare

Two players each flip a card. Compare the fractions and write a sentence to compare the fractions.

Center 17: Comparing Fractions on a Number Line

Choose a card. Read the sentence and find a fraction on the number line that matches.  Record the fraction on the number line.

Center 18: Find the Fraction

Pick a card. Read the question.  Find the illustration that matches the fraction.

Center 19: Domino Fractions

Two players each flip a domino card. Write the dominos as fractions and model your fractions.  Then compare the fractions. The person with the largest fraction wins the round.

Center 20: Roll and Cover a Fraction

Roll a die.  Cover a fraction that matches your roll.

Center 21: Fractions: True or False?

Read the statement on the card.  Decide if it is true or false.

Center 22: Fractions on a Number Line

Pick a card. Look at the number line. Record the fraction that is represented by the number line on the recording sheet.

For each page, there is a grade-level standard attached so you know EXACTLY what you are covering! You can feel confident that ALL the standards for Third Grade are being covered!

HOW DO I ORGANIZE THE UNITS?

I chose to store the math centers in Sterilite bins because they don’t take up too much space. It is a tight fit, but I find that they work nicely for me.  However, if you choose, you could store the centers in a larger container as well. Within the bin, each math center is stored in a gallon-sized ziplock baggie.
