I am so excited to have finally finished a project that has been on my to-do list for a long time! I wanted to create a series of Emergent Readers that would help with newly learned decoding skills and sight word recognition…and they are FINALLY done!
It is always a challenge to find the right level of reading materials, especially for EARLY readers! I have a brand new reader in our house who is VERY eager to read. I wanted to encourage that and provide her with reading materials that would help build confidence and fluency. Many emergent readers incorporate sight words, but also rely on “guessing”.
For example, an emergent reader may have the following text:
I see a big blue house.
If we take a close look at this sentence we see the following:
*5 pre-primer sight words: I see a big blue
*and one word that would be not be decodable for early readers: house
There is nothing “wrong” with these type of emergent readers, especially when there is strong picture support. But… I wanted to create a set of emergent readers that provides early readers with an opportunity to practice decoding only simple cvc words and also work on sight word recognition. This is exactly why I created our new Emergent Readers series!
*This Emergent Readers series works with the following pre-primer sight words:
a, and, away, big, blue, can, come, down, find, for, funny, go, help, here, I, in, it, is, jump, little, look, make, me, my, not, one, play, red, run, said, see, the, three, to, two, up, we, where, yellow and you.
**Each set will also focus on short vowel word families

Short Vowel Word Families: e
Short Vowel Word Families: i
Short Vowel Word Families: o
Short Vowel Word Families: u
Each emergent reader is 6 pages when cut in half. They are super easy to assemble and only require a cut and a few staples.
I cut three pages at once, stacked them and stapled. EASY!
Here is a set that has been printed, cut and stapled! They are ready to go and it only took a couple of minutes to get these ready.
When I gave Sophia the bucket of books, she said, “Oh wow! Are these all for me?”
We are having SO much FUN and so much SUCCESS with our new Emergent Readers! I have a HAPPY little reader and not a frustrated one. She is reading sight words and she is decoding simple CVC words! As soon as she finishes one reader she says, “Another one, another one!” Music to my ears! I already printed and stapled 75 emergent readers, which are ready for her at any time!
She couldn’t be more excited about being able to read! On the cover of each reader there is a place to put your name and 3 check boxes that can be checked off each time you read the reader. The more they read, the more fluent and confident they will become!
Bottom line…kids like to color! So…why not let them color their emergent readers? They are much more invested in their reading when they can claim some kind ownership!

She wanted to read her emergent readers over and over again because SHE had colored it, it was HER book and she was ABLE to read it!
If we came across a sight word that we didn’t know very well, we highlighted it with a yellow crayon. Since each emergent reader has a “focused sight word”, this was a great way to reinforce the ones that were a bit difficult for her.

I had the exact same thought as you did when it come to decodable and non-decodable words. I dislike that so many "early readers" have non-decodable words and no cvc words. When are they supposed to use their sounding out skills? 🙂 So, I've been making my own mini readers also, to go along with your list of sight words and the cvc family, but yours are so much better. (Not to mention your pictures are so much more fun!) I am so excited to start using them next week!!

Oh Annie another fabulous product! Completely agree with Britney as well. We cringe at the books/companies who sell "Beginning Readers" whose words are not decodable, follow no sound pattern, do not have appropriate sight words, etc. These are fantastic. Early readers will feel successful and be engaged with the adorable pictures. Love 'em!

These are fabulous! In my classroom, we always read a new book 3 times. We note that with each read, we are becoming more fluent. Excited to print and share them with my class.

These are awesome, most that I see out there go by a pattern on every page and these don't all do that, which is what I was looking for. My kids have to read a DRA 6 by the end of the year and I think these will help them greatly!!! Thank you for the hard work!

I have been having difficulty finding appropriate readers for my students as well. It is so difficult to find readers that are truly at my student's level. When I do, the readers are not motivating !and boring. Thank you for creating these
